We are currently running a feasibility/acceptability study in the well newborn units at MGH and Newton-Wellesley of a non-invasive device that measures end-tidal carbon monoxide (ETCO) in exhaled breath which has been shown in prior studies to be a sensitive and specific marker of hemolysis. Hemolysis in the newborn is important to detect as it can put newborns at increased risk of pathologic hyperbilirubinemia. Our current methods of evaluating newborns for hemolysis involve invasive blood draws. The current feasibility study aims to enroll 100 newborns in a universal screening model. Further studies may involve targeted screening using ETCO. The role of the medical student in this project would involve completing the necessary human research training modules to be added to the study staff in order to consent families and use the device for data collection. Chart review for additional data collection and analysis will also be needed.

Publications listed below are automatically derived from MEDLINE/PubMed and other sources, which might result in incorrect or missing publications. Faculty can login to make corrections and additions.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
