Translational research projects are available at the intersection of molecular cell biology and cancer medicine in the Miyamoto Lab in the MGH Cancer Center and MGH Department of Radiation Oncology. We study circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the blood, which are rare cancer cells shed by tumors en route to establishing metastases. Although their rarity and fragility make them difficult to study, recent advances in microfluidic technologies now enable the efficient isolation and sophisticated molecular analyses of CTCs. This project explores the potential of CTC RNA expression profiling to guide therapeutic decision making in early stage prostate cancer. Student responsibilities will include organizing the collection of patient blood samples, analyzing CTC expression profiling data, building clinical databases for correlative analyses, performing statistical analyses, and writing abstracts and manuscripts for publication. I am looking for motivated students who will play a critical role in designing and carrying out these highly translational research projects.
