The purpose of this pilot study includes: 1. To evaluate innate and adaptive immune responses of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected women during and after pregnancy 2. To describe the changes in the composition of gut microbiomes and metabolome during pregnancy and its effect on systemic immune responses. Chronic HBV infection is a dynamic state of interaction between HBV and the immune system. It is characterized by a transition through different clinical and virological phases that are thought to be associated with changes in the HBV-specific immune response. Changes in HBV DNA levels and disease activity are also observed during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, and in the postpartum period. However, the immune mechanisms of pregnancy related to HBV infection are poorly understood. In particular, prospective immunological studies have not been performed to characterize innate and HBV-specific adaptive immune responses in HBV-related disease activities during pregnancy. The student will have an opportunity to participate in the evaluation and recruitment of pregnant women with chronic hepatitis B for this study. There will be opportunity to learn about the basic immune mechanisms in viral infection and management of hepatitis B during pregnancy.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
