During residency, a group of Co-residents and I were awarded the ACGME Back-To-Bedside grant to develop a novel solution to improve patient-provider communication. Our concept was a deck of cards with one question on each card. Patients were given the card deck and were able to select 2-3 cards with questions they'd like to ask their provider when they came into the room. We completed a 4-month pilot study with great reception from patients. We quickly realized this had great potential as a digital health tool and created a mobile and desktop application that utilizes the concept. The software has many medical topics with lists of questions to ask your healthcare provider, and users can save questions to personalized lists. Users can also attach their healthcare providers answers as audio, image, or text to questions. We are a digital health platform with plans to apply for NIH funding to test the clinical application of this tool. The student would be involved in helping design the study, recruit team members, oversee operations, and manuscript writing in the end. The research will be primarily based on using the digital health tool in the primary care or hospital setting with chronic conditions (i.e. diabetes, heart failure) although this is flexible. The outcomes would involve both patient satisfaction, treatment adherence, and healthcare outcomes. More can be seen about the concept at www.bedsidechats.com. Would be happy to talk over zoom if more details are needed.
