Overview
I am currently Director of Clinical Operations (East Campus) for the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. I am deeply involved in operations projects, improving OR efficiency, productivity, on time starts and turn over time. I am in charge of 21 Operating Rooms and 5 Gastroenterology suites and two Radiology suites. We perform an average of 60 cases per day.
As Clinical Director, I would like to institute a Fellowship for OR operations management.
As Director of PACU I have developed new PACU curriculum for residents. I have changed the focus of resident training in the PACU from skills based training to a more team based and interactive approach. The PACU now offers an ideal backdrop for residents to develop interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, and how to be an effective team member as well as an advocate for the patient.
I have initiated and completed major projects for improving patient care. I have introduced new policies for the management of severe postoperative pain using novel approches. Established policies for the handling of Medical patients in the PACU so that their care is seamless and safe. As a member of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) workgroup I am advocating for safer and effective means of treating and managing patients with CPAP machines in the PACU. Pathways are also being developed for the screening of all patients for sleep apnea to minimize complication in the rceovery unit. This is one of the major patient safety initiaves being considered by JCAHO.
Over the past many years I have taken a keen interest in resident mentoring and teaching. My daily responsibilities include teaching residents within the operating room as well as teaching medical students and paramedical trainees. Currently I am an active member of the Transplant anesthesia team as well as the Vascular anesthesia team, both of which have high acuity case loads. I also serve as resource and point person for issues related to the management of coagulopathy, management of patients with carotid and cardiac disease and patients in renal and liver failure. I have organized many anesthesia written board review sessions for residents and fellows as well as a examiner at the MGH anesthesia oral board review.
