Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder due to a deletion of 26-28 genes on chromosome 7, affecting 1/7,500 live births. Common clinical features include distinct facial features, developmental delays, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and a hypersocial personality. Significant medical comorbidities affecting multiple organ systems can also occur. Psychiatric symptoms, particularly inattention, hyperactivity, anxiety, and sleep problems, affect at least 80% of individuals with WS and are a main determinant of quality of life. The medical comorbidities in WS make the safe use of psychiatric medications challenging. The scientific literature on psychopharmacology in WS remains limited.

The aim of this study is to complete a retrospective chart review of patients with WS treated with specific classes of psychiatric medications (e.g. stimulant medications, buspirone, melatonin) to report on the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of these medications.

The student would participate in study design, data collection (retrospective chart review), data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Results of the work may lead to presentation and/or publication opportunities. Work can be done remotely or in person. Dr. Thom and her team are available to mentor and work with students. The expected time commitment is at least 4 hours per week.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Lurie Center for Autism is a multidisciplinary center providing care to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across the lifespan. Individuals with ASD have an increased burden of medical comorbidities and limited access to quality health care. This project aims to determine whether females with ASD receive primary (HPV vaccination) and secondary (pap smears) preventative health services for cervical cancer according to the United States Preventive Services Task Force guidelines and to understand what barriers may exist. The long term goal of the study is to create clinical workflows and shape healthcare policies that increase access to these lifesaving health interventions for women with ASD.

The student would participate in study design, data collection (survey administration, retrospective chart review, focus groups), data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Results of the work may lead to presentation/publication opportunities and/or community outreach opportunities. Work can be done remotely or in person. Dr. Thom and her team are available to mentor and work with students. The expected time commitment is at least 4 hours per week.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
