This project will be focused on the molecular effects of general anesthetics in the developing brain. Anesthetic drugs are used for a variety of medical procedures, but little is known about how anesthetics affect the developing nervous system, especially in infants and young children. Using in vitro and in vivo models of neurodegeneration, the role of NMDA receptor antagonism will be investigated in cell division and maturation. In our previous study, anesthetics – like ketamine and dexmedetomidine, could induce neuroapoptosis in vitro and in vivo. However, this mechanism is still unclear. For this project, the student will involve in the apart of this project’s design and experimental data collection as well as the writing. During this period, the student will learn the basic skills including animal handling, organ’s collection, neuronal cells isolation, cell culture, western blotting, etc.
