There is an opportunity to join and contribute to a long-range effort in a new approach to sleep physiology and pathology, called "sleep effectiveness". This approach to sleep is totally different from the conventional stages, yet is complementary. The base signal is the electrocardiogram (ECG), from which mapping of coupled oscillations during sleep provides a unique biological map. The technique is being applied to large (> 10000) and small datasets across the age spectrum, including epidemiological studies such as the Framingham Heart Study and the Korean Genome and Epidemiology study. The student will have a choice from a wide variety of options, based on interest, prior background and time. The student will learn significant amounts of sleep science across the basic, clinical and laboratory spectrum. Specific student type project include: 1. The genetic determinants of effective sleep. 2. Hemodynamics of sleep states. 3. Sleep effectiveness as a driver of sleep apnea pathology 4. Long range dynamics of sleep effectiveness in healthy and diseased populations.
