Facial palsy is a devastating condition with significant functional and aesthetic consequences. Currently, restoration of spontaneous facial motion after ipsilateral nerve loss is only possible using cross face nerve grafting techniques, though failure rates remain unacceptably high (greater than 30%). Thus, we are in the process of developing a wearable closed-loop facial pacing system in which movements from the healthy side are detected, processed, and used to trigger matched diseased-side movements. We would welcome student support with directly interfacing with and enrolling patients in clinic for use of the device, as well as device-patient calibration and data collection. If interested, opportunities would be available to work on computer vision model refinement for motion detection as well as data analysis.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
