Overview
My research is focused on exploring the pathophysiology underlying emerging and environmentally-mediated kidney diseases, and on using these physiologic understandings to develop and apply improved prevention and treatment regimens. In addition to my MD training, I hold a master’s degree in public health with a focus on epidemiology and biostatistics. Much of my work to date has revolved around Chronic Kidney Disease of Nontraditional Cause (CKDnt), alternatively called Mesoamerican Nephropathy (MeN). I was principal investigator and first author for one of the early prevalence studies on CKDnT in a hotspot region in Central America, and have since led research to determine the accuracy of kidney function estimating equations in CKDnT populations. My current work focuses on metabolic features of CKDnt, supported by a Doris Duke Physician Scientist Fellowship award, and more broadly on the application of "omics" methodologies to understand CKDnT pathophysiology. I am chairperson of the board of directors of La Isla Network, a nonprofit devoted to CKDnt research which is responsible for the creation and study of the first protocols designed to prevent the onset of CKDnt. I am also a founding member and current board co-chairperson for the Consortium on the Epidemic of Nephropathy in Central America and Mexico (CENCAM), the principal international society of researchers focused on the disease. Outside CKDnT, I study metabolic alterations and therapies in patients with COVID-19 associated acute kidney injury, as well as kidney injury, electrolytes, and acid base disorders in critically ill patients.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
