Research Interests
My research interests include both basic and applied aspects of sleep research and circadian physiology. Much of my work has focused on understanding the effects of sleep and circadian rhythms on human metabolism, including energy, lipid, and glucose metabolism. I have also examined the effects of chronic sleep loss and circadian disruption on sleep structure and neurobehavioral performance, as well as how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed sleep and daily rhythms globally. My other research interests include applying artificial intelligence to improve the diagnostic process for detecting and treating sleep disorders, and pursuing novel treatments for sleep and circadian rhythm disorders such as the shift work disorder.

    Role Description: The goal of this study is to develop a deep neural network model to automatically detect apneas and hypopneas from the electrocardiogram signal and apply his technique to the scoring of out-of-center sleep tests (OCSTs).

    Early vs. late time restricted feeding, circadian timing, and chronotype in overweight and obese adults: Impact on weight loss and cardiometabolic health
    Role Description: The goal of this study is to test in overweight and obese free-living adults the impact of early time-restricted feeding vs. late-time-restricted feeding on weight loss and cardiometabolic health, and to examine whether individual chronotype mediates these effects.

    Role Description: The goal of this study is to determine in highly trained musicians whether there is evidence that automatic behavior (AB), which occurs during highly learned behaviors such as playing an instrument and is characterized by a continuation of the behavior with amnesia, is due to local sleep where small areas of the brain go offline.
