Overview
Dr. Panagiotis Simitsis MD, MSc, MBA, PhD(c), FHFA is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) and Cardiac Transplantation at the Center for Advanced Heart Disease, Heart and Vascular Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Since 2020 he has been a Senior Consultant Cardiologist in the 2nd University Department of Intensive Care Medicine at Attikon University Hospital, Athens Medical School in Greece. He had his subspecialty 2-year clinical training in Heart Failure at King's College Hospital (London, UK) as also supra-specialty 3-year clinical training in Intensive Care Medicine at Attikon University Hospital. He specializes clinically in the management of cardiogenic shock in ICU, temporary mechanical circulatory support (IABP, ECMO), mechanical ventilation and transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in ICU. He is a member of the Pulmonary Hypertension Unit, the Cardiogenic Shock Team and the Organ Procurement Team for brain death donors.

He holds an MSc in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Athens Medical School, 2011) with honors. He also holds an MSc in Medical Statistics (Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics, 2015) with honors. With regards to Statistics, he focuses on distributions of random variables, statistical inference, statistical modelling, advanced methods in survival analysis (i.e. frailty models and multistate competing risks survival analysis), Bayesian statistics, clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, epidemiologic models, techniques of handling missing data (imputation analysis) and techniques of eliminating bias in non-randomized studies (such as propensity score matching, inverse probability weighting etc.). He was honored to be selected by the European Heart Academy and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for a prestigious fees scholarship for the MSc in Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences at the London School of Economics (LSE) from which he graduated in 2018 with distinction and the prestigious Brian Abel-Smith Prize for the best dissertation. With regards to Health Economics, he focuses on the evaluation of Health Programs, economic analysis for health policy, quality and outcomes evaluation, measuring health system performance, economic evaluation in healthcare, financing healthcare, methodology of cost-effectiveness analysis and Health Technology Assessment and Appraisal (HTA).

Dr Simitsis studied for the Postgraduate Course in Heart Failure held at the Zurich University Hospital (Faculty of Medicine, University of Zurich, Switzerland) and graduated in 2019 with a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in heart failure. Subsequently, he was nominated Heart Failure Specialist of Tomorrow (HoT) Member of the ESC Heart Failure Association (HFA) Committee on Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction for the period 2020-22. In March 2021 he was nominated Fellow of the HFA (FHFA).
