Overview
Our laboratory focuses on the mechanisms underlying sepsis and septic organ injury. We are particularly interested in the role of glycosaminoglycans (such as heparan sulfate) in the onset, propagation, and resolution of septic lung, kidney, and brain injury. Using novel glycoanalytical approaches, we seek to find new insights into the mechanistic and phenotypic heterogeneity of critical illness.

  1. R21GM151565 (SCHMIDT, ERIC PETER) Jul 14, 2023 - Aug 31, 2025
    NIH
Optimization of a rapid assay to quantify circulating glycosaminoglycans and identify vascular endotypes of sepsis.
Role Description: The goal of this study is to test the accuracy of dimethylmethylene blue (DMMB) as a rapid, point-of-care assay of endothelial glycocalyx degradation, and then use this optimized assay to discern vascular endotypes of sepsis and septic shock.
    Role: Principal Investigator
  2. R21GM151565 (SCHMIDT, ERIC PETER) Jul 14, 2023 - Jun 30, 2025
    NIH
Optimization of a rapid assay to quantify circulating glycosaminoglycans and identify vascular endotypes of sepsis
    Role: Principal Investigator
  3. R01HL168892 (HERSON, PACO S) Mar 15, 2023 - Feb 29, 2028
    NIH
Vascular mechanisms of sepsis-induced cognitive dysfunction
    Role: Co-Principal Investigator
  4. R01HL168892-01 (HERSON, PACO S) Mar 15, 2023 - Feb 29, 2028
    NIH
Vascular mechanisms of sepsis-induced cognitive dysfunction
Role Description: The goal of this study is to understand the mechanisms by which circulating heparan sulfates selectively penetrate memory centers of the brain, leading to cognitive impairment in sepsis survivors.
    Role: Co-Principal Investigator
  5. R13HL152479 (SCHMIDT, ERIC PETER) Jul 1, 2020 - Jun 30, 2021
    NIH
ARDS in the 21st Century: New Insights into Clinical and Mechanistic Heterogeneity
    Role: Principal Investigator

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
