Overview
Gonzalo Labarca, MD, MS, FACP, FCCP, is a clinical fellow in Sleep Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (former instructor in Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School). Dr. Labarca is a physician-scientist investigating pathways that modulate the relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and worse health outcomes.

Dr. Labarca received his MD from the University of Desarrollo and trained in Internal Medicine at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Dr. Labarca is certified in Internal Medicine / Pulmonary Medicine (Chile). He completed a postdoctoral T-32 Research training program in Sleep, Circadian, and Respiratory Neurobiology in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Master’s in Sleep Medicine through the European University, Spain.

He serves as Associate Editor for ARS Medical, Chilean Journal of Respiratory Diseases, Guest Editor for Frontiers in Medicine/ Respiratory Medicine, review Editor for Frontiers in Sleep, and peer reviewer in several Q1 journals. He is also an active member of the Chilean Society of respiratory diseases, the American College of Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, The American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. To facilitate professional development, he advocates for Latino/Hispanic representation in sleep medicine.

Dr. Labarca has received numerous awards, including Best Medical Student in 2010, the Chilean Society of Respiratory Medicine (SER Chile) award, the Latin American Association of Thorax (ALAT) research scholar award, the Medical Society of Santiago (SMS) Research Award, the Best publication in Chile during 2020 award, Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology (SRN), American Thoracic Society scholarship award.

Dr. Labarca has mentored over 20 trainees and has over 100 publications, including the author of original investigations, reviews, Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses, international consensus, editorials, and chapters in high-impact journals such as The Lancet of Respiratory Medicine, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Sleep Medicine Reviews, Sleep, Chest, and European Respiratory Journal. He is involved in media relations to increase awareness of sleep disorders, has appeared on numerous national news broadcasts, and has been an invited lecturer on a national and international level.

Phenotyping Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Latin American women: The Latin American Sleep Network (LATAM Sleep Net)
Role Description: In this project, we plan to quantitatively describe the clinical and novel OSA-driven phenotypes (hypoxic burden, delta heart rate) among women from different sleep clinics in Latin America. We also plan to test whether hypoxic burden or delta heart rate predicts CPAP response after one month of therapy.
    Role: Principal Investigator

Novel physiologically-driven phenotypes for the prognosis of cardiovascular outcomes in sleep apnea: Toward precision medicine in sleep health
Role Description: In this project, we plan to use two novel sleep apnea-specific metrics to predict the risk of incident hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease across multiple cohorts using an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis and examine the extent to which the effect varies by race, sex, and age. We also plan to test the predictive ability of these novel markers when added to an established 10-year CVD prediction model: the Pooled Cohort Equation to estimate 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk.
    Role: Co-Investigator
  3. 254-FP-21 (Gonzalo Labarca) Nov 1, 2021 - Nov 1, 2022
American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)
Association between the sleep apnea specific hypoxic burden (SASHB) with incident neurocognitive impairment
Role Description: To determine if the SAHSB can identify individuals with OSA with an increased prevalence and incidence of irreversible neurocognitive impairment. We plan to determine the strength of association of SASHB with the prevalence and incidence of neurocognitive impairment in older men in the MrOS (training dataset) and determinate the consistency and reproducibility of the association of SASHB with incident NI in the ARIC study included in the SHHS (validation dataset).
    Role: Principal Investigator

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
