The field of AI is rapidly evolving as is the introduction of AI into almost all aspects of research, and specifically clinical research. While such clinical research does undergo review and approval by an IRB, the ethical framework for that review is poorly defined. When discussing the ethics of AI use, there are several questions we should bear in mind. What are we using it for, and what is our goal? Whose interests is it serving? Is it its use transparent, explainable, and fair, and how can one judge? Is the data on which AI applications are based representative, and is the provenance and accuracy known?Should AI treat it differently when the actual ethical concerns and attendant mitigation levers may significantly overlap with those of more familiar technologies? Working with a multi-stakeholder group, this project will involve a scoping literature review and the development of a framework for the ethical review of protocols involving AI.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
