The fundamental framework for both my academic and administrative work is built on my experience as a neuropsychiatrist, and applies a modern cybernetic approach to better understand the complex dynamics of individuals, organizations, and society. Through this frame my work examines questions such as:

1. How can we apply our current neuroscientific understanding of human learning to create optimal learning environments, so that individuals and organizations can grow and flourish?

2. How can we create regulatory and organizational controls on healthcare operations to promote safety, while encouraging professional autonomy and innovation?

3. How can we best understand and mitigate the moral and ethical externalities of dynamic healthcare systems, with a particular focus on the impact on patients with mental health conditions?

While significant attention is presently focused on the pace of improvement of artificial intelligence, and its potential application in healthcare, less focus is being placed on the rate of improvement (or lack thereof) in human-provided care. What is the rate of improvement in diagnostic accuracy amongst human physicians as a composite? In technical skill? In empathic listening? In what ways has the deployment of technology diminished our own capacity to provide care, and what are the implications to healthcare as a whole? Focusing on the role of feedback from medical error, this project will examine ways in which technological uptake promotes or diminishes human performance, and considers the medium to long term sequelae of these changes.
