Overview
I am a cross-disciplinary clinical researcher trained in infectious diseases and critical care medicine. My current research focuses on pregnancy-related infections and their effects on child health outcomes. Currently, I am studying differences in placental structure, function, and transplacental antibody transfer by maternal HIV serostatus; microbiology of maternal and neonatal sepsis; and associations between antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in resource-limited settings. I partner with obstetricians, pediatricians, immunologists, computational biologists, and biostatisticians to carry out multidisciplinary research on these topics in Uganda. Broadly, I am interested in understanding how maternal infections affect health outcomes in their offspring in resource-limited settings. I also practice clinical infectious diseases and critical care medicine in the inpatient setting.

Microbiome-driven immune changes and growth stunting in HIV-exposed uninfected children
Role Description: Our overarching goals are to identify clinical, environmental, diet, and epidemiologic features associated with growth stunting in HEU children, characterize mechanisms of host-microbe communication, and link gut microbiome profiles to immune development in growth stunted HEU children using a multi’omics approach. To do so, we will leverage data, biobanked, and newly collected samples from an ongoing prospective longitudinal birth cohort in Uganda to relate growth stunting, diarrheal disease burden, and adverse clinical outcomes to microbiome-driven changes in HEU child immunity.
