A National Analysis of Observation Care Among Medicare Beneficiaries with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias
Role Description: Older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) go the emergency department (ED) and the hospital more often than those without dementia. In recent years, older adults who go to the ED have increasingly been placed in observation status, rather than discharged home or admitted to the hospital. This project will examine how the use of observation care has changed in recent years for people with ADRD, whether these changes have been associated with worse health outcomes, and how doctors can better assess patients with ADRD for risk of faring poorly during or after an observation stay.
Role: Principal Investigator
