Neurobiology of narcolepsy [login at prompt]

Narcolepsy is a common sleep disorder caused by loss of the orexin-producing neurons in the hypothalamus. The student will perform basic science research using mouse models of narcolepsy to identify the brain circuits that give rise to sleepiness and cataplexy. Techniques may include fiber photometry to track neuronal activity and levels of neurotransmitters, optogenetics, chemogenetics, sleep recordings in mice, and anatomic studies. Prior experience in basic animal research is helpful but not necessary. The mentor (Dr. Scammell) has an office next to the lab in the Center for Life Sciences and will meet with the student at least weekly.
