Overview
Research:
Systems biology of host-commensal-pathogen interactions
Metabolic modeling of obligate anaerobe metabolism
Immunomodulatory properties of gut commensals
Genomically-informed pathogen surveillance for clinical and population health

Innovation/Platform technologies:
I direct the Massachusetts Host-Microbiome Center which provides integrated gnotobiotic, microbiologic, molecular/metabolomic and computational resources to support studies in how the microbiota influences our health and disease. We have supported >100 groups in the greater Boston area and beyond.
I also developed the Crimson prospective collection and patient recruitment system that supports >200 clinical studies among Boston-based institutions and with other collaborators in the US and abroad.
Startups: Cognoscenti Health Institute (2001; advisor), iSpecimen (2010; founder), ParetoBio Inc (2018, founder)

Teaching:
I teach the "Introduction to Anaerobe Physiology" course through Harvard's Microbial Sciences Inititative and the Mass. Host-Microbiome Center.
I also teach microbiome and pathogen genomics sections in the BCMP and HST course offerings at Harvard Medical School.
I am a mentor for Project Success at Harvard Medical School.

Clinical:
I am Associate Medical Director in the Clinical Microbiology and Molecular Pathology services at Brigham and Women's Hospital, my duties include oversight of complex molecular testing for infectious agents and surveillance programs for multi-drug resistant species and for spore forming pathogens.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
