Filial piety (Chinese ? ; Vietnamese hi?u) typically is understood as requiring family members to demand all life-sustaining treatments for their elders, even when it appears that these treatments would be harmful and provide no benefit. Thus, it is important to re-interpret filial piety in the age of Invasive life-sustaining technologies. This project can be done with or without travel to China or Vietnam. However, reading and speaking knowledge of Chinese or Vietnamese is required.

There is a large global inequity in access to palliative care, largely because palliative care training and leadership is lacking in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). As part of the work of the HMS Program in Global Palliative Care to help build palliative care training and leadership capacity in LMICs, a clear understanding is needed of existing palliative care specialist training programs that meet internationally recognized criteria. This project entails completing design of a survey, administering the survey to palliative care training programs around the world, analyzing the data, and reporting it in a peer-reviewed publication. Supervision will be provided in all aspects of the project. No travel is necessary, although the student would be welcome to visit one or more of the training sites.
