Overview
I am Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and on staff at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (USVA) Boston Healthcare System. I am currently interim Head of the HMS-VA Department of Psychiatry. I also serve as Associate Director of the Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research (CHOIR), a national USVA Health Services Research and Development Center of Innovation and am Co-Principal Investigator of the USVA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative for Team-Based Behavioral Health, a research and implementation center for enhancing mental health services through team-based care.

My major research focus has been on developing, testing, and implementing recovery-oriented care models for individuals with severe mental health conditions, with an emphasis on interventions that flexibly respond to the needs of real-world clinical settings. These efforts have been consistently supported through competitive federal and foundation research awards. Our Life Goal Collaborative Care model is listed on US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's prestigious National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.

I also direct the USVA Bipolar Disorders Telehealth Program, a novel strategy for implementing care management for this condition across the healthcare system. Notably, I also have extensive experience as a healthcare administrator in the USVA, which provides me with a sophisticated understanding of implementation challenges and strategies in spreading evidence-based healthcare.

I have won regional and national awards for clinical care, teaching, research, and healthcare reorganization, and am particularly grateful for having received the Gerald R. Klerman Senior Investigator Award from the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and the Distinguished Friend of Behavior Therapy Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy.

I have published over 200 scientific articles and book chapters as well as materials for the lay public and 6 books. My interest in the lived experience of mental health conditions led to compiling the poetry anthology, A Mind Apart (Oxford University Press, 2009).

I am currently seeking to extend implementation support for mental health services to resource-poor environments both nationally and abroad, emphasizing task-sharing to deploy efficient evidence-based treatments for common mental health conditions. The Life Goals Program represents one such intervention.
