Overview
Dr Warraich's principal effort at VA Boston Healthcare System, Brigham and Womens Hospital and HMS is as a clinician scientist in cardiology and advanced heart failure and transplantation. At the VA, he is the Associate Director of Heart Failure and Program Lead for the Advanced Heart Failure program in the Department of Medicine, Cardiology Section. At BWH, he is an associate physician, rounding on the advanced heart failure and transplantation service and attending on heart failure outpatient clinics. He is also the fellowship coordinator for the BWH advanced heart failure fellows rotating at the VA.

He is internationally recognized in the scientific community and lay public as an expert on end of life care and palliative care for patients with cardiovascular disease. This is a novel and important area in which he has both performed novel first-author original research that has been published in JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Cardiology, JAMA Neurology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation Heart Failure, Journal of the American Heart Association and Journal of Palliative Medicine, amongst others. He has now transitioned to mentoring junior investigators and has authored several senior author original investigations including in the New England Journal of Medicine. He is frequently invited by journals to review and write editorials for major studies in this field.

He has also written about this area for newspapers such as the New York Times and wrote the critically acclaimed, best selling book, Modern Death published by St Martins Press in 2017, which has been translated in multiple languages. He has also written a more recent book, State of the Heart published by St Martins Press in 2019. His extensive history writing for the lay audience has resulted in considerable coverage of this work, including on NPR, New York Times, BBC, CNN, etc.
