Mentoring
Available: 11/23/19, Expires: 11/23/20

The proposed study will involve a secondary analysis of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual, nationally representative survey of substance use and mental health among adolescents and adults in the United States. We will estimate correlates of treatment and unmet need among people with co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. Our primary hypothesis is that treatment uptake is greatly reduced among people with co-occurring disorders and that the extent of uptake is further reduced with cumulative comorbidity.

The student's role will be to write analysis code (in Stata or R), conduct a literature review, and write a manuscript describing the findings. All research activities will be supervised. The expectation is that the student will be the first author of the manuscript unless they are unable or unwilling to complete the tasks to their appropriate conclusion. If more than one potential manuscript emerges from this work, the student will also be given the opportunity to lead those manuscripts as first author. Requirements: basic knowledge of biostatistics, basic familiarity with Stata or R programming.

Available: 11/24/19, Expires: 11/24/20

The proposed study will involve a systematic review (and, if warranted, meta-analysis) of the literature on stigma attached to opioid use and opioid use disorder, and how this stigma affects opioid agonist treatment. Our primary hypothesis is that stigma undermines treatment at all stages of the opioid treatment cascade, including treatment uptake and long-term retention in care.

The student's role will be to work with a research librarian to develop a rigorous evidence search strategy, conduct the literature review, manage the evidence database, and write a manuscript describing the findings. Requirements: basic knowledge of reference manager software (e.g, EndNote).

Available: 11/24/19, Expires: 11/24/20

The proposed study will involve a systematic review of the literature on stigma and adherence to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Our primary hypothesis is that stigma undermines PrEP uptake and adherence.

The student's role will be to work with a research librarian to develop a rigorous evidence search strategy, conduct the literature review, manage the evidence database, and write a manuscript describing the findings. All research activities will be supervised. The expectation is that the student will be the first author of the manuscript unless they are unable or unwilling to complete the tasks to their appropriate conclusion. If more than one potential manuscript emerges from this work, the student will also be given the opportunity to lead those manuscripts as first author.

Requirements: familiarity with reference manager software (e.g, EndNote).

Available: 11/24/19, Expires: 11/24/20

The proposed study will involve an econometric analysis of data from the General Social Survey, and data on mass shootings in the US. We will adopt a quasi-experimental approach to estimating the quantities of interest. Our primary hypothesis is that exposure to a mass shooting has a causal effect on increasing stigmatizing attitudes toward persons with mental illness.

The student's role will be to investigate potential data sources on mass shootings, conduct a literature review, write analysis code (in Stata or R), and write a manuscript describing the findings. All research activities will be supervised. The expectation is that the student will be the first author of the manuscript unless they are unable or unwilling to complete the tasks to their appropriate conclusion. If more than one potential manuscript emerges from this work, the student will also be given the opportunity to lead those manuscripts as first author.

Requirements: advanced knowledge of biostatistics, and programming in Stata or R

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication.
