Mentoring
Available: 12/21/18, Expires: 12/31/20

I have been working with colleagues in Rwanda since 2010 to improve care for critically ill patients through education and research. Our focus has been on acute respiratory failure including ARDS, oxygen supply and utilization, sepsis including antimicrobial resistance, and training in critical care including ultrasound.

Our work has resulted in improvements in ICU care and training, as well as twenty-three collaborative papers. We mentor both residents and medical students, generally pairing American trainees with their Rwandan counterparts.

We are looking for students who are committed, compassionate, and humble. We need a minimum time commitment of four months, and can mentor year-long projects as well. Our current efforts are focused on oxygen utilization and medical education innovations in critical care.

If you are interested, please send an email with your resume and brief description of your interests to eriviell@bidmc.harvard.edu.

The student would have an opportunity to choose among projects within the topic of critical care in resource constrained settings. Current projects focus on hypoxemia and the rational use of oxygen, ARDS, ultrasound, antimicrobial resistance, mortality prediction among critically ill patients, and the impact of critical care education in Rwanda. Ideally the student would spend a year developing and implementing the project, with an opportunity (though not requirement) of spending significant time in Rwanda.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
