I am seeking student collaborators to conduct research on the effects of formalizing the "patient as teacher" role on patient satisfaction. While there is robust research on patient perceptions of interactions with students in longitudinal settings, or in teaching students around a particular disease process, there is little research on the patient experience in the primary care setting when learners are involved. We propose to study this through a randomized process where some patients will be invited at the visit outset to teach students, and then at the end of the clinical encounter will be asked for their formal feedback to the student. We will ask two questions - what did the student do well, and what would the patient recommend to be changed for future visits. This will be compared with "usual treatment" where the student faculty and patient interact in a more traditional way, without specific request for patient feedback. Interested students will be involved in finalizing the study design and IRB application (which is nearly complete), conducting the patient interviews, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
