Available: 07/17/17, Expires: 02/28/18

We use ingestible biosensors--small gelatin capsules into which a medication is placed--that contain a small radio transmitter; once in the stomach, the radio transmitter is activated, the signal containing ingestion information is relayed onto a cloud-based server on the web. Because we can detect medication within minutes of ingestion, we have used these digital pills to measure oxycodone adherence in diverse populations in natural environments. Now we are interested in learning more about the environmental events--stress, pain, mood, affect--that are associated with the need for ingestion of PRN opioids. These data will help inform future interventions designed to prevent opioid misuse. Students involved in this study will help design the study, recruit study participants, conduct post-participation interviews, assist with data analysis, and draft abstacts for national meetings and manuscripts for publication. I have a long track record of mentees obtaining NIH funding, and we a really fun, cool group to work with.

Drones in medicine[login at prompt]
Available: 12/07/17, Expires: 06/01/18

This project focuses on the use of drones to perform the physical examination in resource-limited settings. The goal is to determine how do perform a physical examination when no examiner is present.
