The purpose of the study is to determine whether a Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) decision aid improves patient understanding of different anesthetic options, specifically the difference between sedation and general anesthesia, and patient engagement in the process of deciding on the best anesthetic plan for their procedure. We are using a mobile phone app to educate about monitored anesthesia care (MAC) for patients who are undergoing breast surgery that is appropriate to be performed under MAC and help them to make an informed choice about the type of anesthesia they receive.
Students will have an opportunity to understand more about research, clinical trial, consenting, patient enrollment, study procedures, documentation, presentation, as well as publication of the study. Additionally students would also learn about the concept of Monitored Anesthesia Care, shared decision making process, and patient education regarding various anesthetic choices. Students would also interact with a learning mobile app and would have exposure to bioinformatics.
