Ever wondered how much your childhood will influence your life as an adult? Interested in seeing how people's careers and relationships develop over 8 decades? The Harvard Study of Adult Development at Massachusetts General Hospital is one of the longest longitudinal studies of lifespan development ever conducted. Data from two remarkable Study cohorts - the Glueck study started in 1938 and the Grant study started in 1939 - continue to provide us with unique windows on determinants of adult mental and physical health.

Unlike the vast majority of lifespan studies that rely on subjects' variable and often hazy memories of the past, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has collected information about men's lives prospectively for nearly 80 years. This critical advantage has made the study one of the primary sources for late 20th and early 21st century research on adult psychosocial development. We have now extended the study to investigate the baby-boomer “children” of our original participants: the second generation. Our new project aims to evaluate the effect of childhood experiences on midlife health, and to use our rich data set to create a detailed model of how early events help shape our well-being in middle age.

Students have the opportunity to help our research team understand and manage this unusual rare data set and pursue research questions about adult development.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
