Role of splicing factor SRSF1 in T cell function and autoimmunity
Role Description: The overall goals of our research are to understand the role of T cells in health and disease. We study cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying immune-mediated diseases with a focus on systemic autoimmunity. Genetics, environmental factors and hormones are implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) which disproportionately afflicts women over men and is a leading cause of mortality in young women. These predisposing factors dysregulate the immune system which fails to recognize self and attacks multiple organs in the body leading to organ damage and pathology. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease with no cure, and steroids are the mainstay of therapy but cause numerous unwanted adverse effects in patients and are therefore not the ideal choice for treatment. There is thus an urgent need to identify specific cellular and molecular targets which would pave the way for new modalities of treatment and management of this devastating disease. Our research aims to understand molecular defects in gene regulation, signaling and function in T lymphocytes, with the long-term goal of identifying new molecules for therapeutics and biomarkers.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
