Overview
Dr. Komaroff has concentrated on the following areas of research during his career, in reverse chronologic order:

1. Chronic "post-infectious" fatigue syndrome: studies of prevalence, etiology and laboratory evaluation
2. Role of human herpesviruses -6A and -6B in human disease
3. Causes and diagnosis of common problems in general medicine, particularly respiratory infections and urinary tract infections
4. Investigation of cost-effective clinical strategies in the practice of general medicine
5. Development of clinical algorithms to describe strategies for diagnosing and treating medical problems
6. Quantitative approaches to medical decision-making
7. Efficient use of medical manpower
8. Creation of computerized medical information systems to analyze medical practices

Since 2015, Dr. Komaroff has retained an active research program, and also remains active as a lecturer at HMS and elsewhere

From 1997-2015, Dr. Komaroff was the Editor in Chief of the Harvard Health Publications Division of Harvard Medical School (HMS), responsible for all HMS publications about health for the general public: books, newsletters, Internet content, and articles for magazines and newspapers.

From 1982-1997, Dr. Komaroff was Director of the Division of General Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), and Senior Physician, responsible for the Division's patient care, teaching and research.

From 1995-97 he directed the HMS General Medicine Fellowship Program.

Between 1995-2014, he was Co-Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Fellowship Training Program, which teaches approximately 300 fellows per year the skills of non-laboratory investigation (epidemiology, statistics, health policy research, cost-effectiveness analysis, and outcomes research).

From 1971-2014, Dr. Komaroff served as attending physician on the outpatient & inpatient services of Beth Israel Hospital and BWH.

From 1982-1997 he co-directed the annual HMS Continuing Medical Education course on the Office Practice of Medicine.

From 1982-1987, he was Vice President for Management Systems of BWH.
