The Celiac Center at BIDMC is a founding member of the Celiac Program at Harvard Medical School and is active in patient care, education and research in celiac disease and gluten-related disorders. The clinical staff at the center has cared for more than 5,000 patients with celiac disease and sees over 200 newly diagnosed patients annually.

The center maintains a rich database on its patients that has acted as a resource for studies on factors that influence dietary adherences, the burden of treatment of celiac disease, obesity in celiac disease and many others. Multiple additional studies are possible using this database. Ongoing studies also examine new approaches to celiac disease diagnosis, novel therapies and management of non-responsive celiac disease. Translational research studies examine in vitro culture of duodenal biopsies from celiac patients as an approach to developing new diagnostic tools and to provide new insights into disease pathogenesis. Educational initiatives include the www.CeliacNow.org website as well as work with local and national Celiac support organizations to address patients’ health education needs.

Thus, a wide range of potential projects are available depending on the interests of the Scholar. Specific project details and plans will be developed by the scholar working with the Celiac Center Medical Director, Dr Ciaran Kelly, and Research Director, Dr Daniel Leffler.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
