When a patient arrives to an emergency department (ED) with acute neurological symptoms, the emergency physician must rapidly decide whether or not to activate a “Code Stroke”. This is a clinical situation in which minutes count! However it is also resource intense and therefore accuracy for calling a Code Stroke is critical. Selecting whom to activate the Code Stroke on is multi-factorial and depends on the whole system (pre-hospital notification, triage nurse identification and physician decision) in order to pull the trigger on activating a Code Stroke. My hypothesis is the system more accurately and more rapidly identifies patients that prove to have an anterior circulation stroke, and less so on stroke mimics and posterior circulation strokes as well as transient events (TIA) versus stroke. Using a database of Code Stroke activations from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the student will analyze various data points and outcomes to test this hypothesis. The data points include time to CT scan, time to tPA if given. Outcomes include ultimate diagnosis of stroke versus stroke mimic and anterior circulation versus posterior circulation event and TIA versus stroke.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
