Currently, the pathophysiology behind the main causes of smell loss in patients is unknown. Part of this problem is due to the lack of detailed information relating to differences in normal vs. abnormal olfactory tissue. The olfactory epithelium is unique in its ability to regenerate new neurons throughout life. The ability to do so is related to resident basal stem cells within the epithelium, and a deviation in their function may result in olfactory disorders. This project would involve analyzing olfactory tissue obtained from autopsy and biopsy specimens using immunohistochemical and molecular techniques. Animal models of disorders in olfactory epithelial regeneration will be used as a comparison to help understand the human correlate of the disease.

Available: 06/27/17, Expires: 06/27/18

This is a basic science research opportunity in the area of olfaction with possible translational research in understanding human olfactory dysfunction. Techniques available include immunohistochemistry as well as molecular techniques. Benchwork will be performed at Tufts University School of Medicine.
