Overview
I am a cancer epidemiologist with a primary research focus on the etiology of multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. My active studies are based in the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study cohorts and include examinations of both lifestyle-related and biomarker-characterized risk factors. To date, we have evaluated body mass index and other anthropometric measures, physical activity, aspirin use and serologic biomarkers of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, insulin, interleukin (IL)-6 and adiponectin dysregulation and risk of multiple myeloma in local studies and in collaboration with external cohorts. A multi-cohort study to examine genetic susceptibility to multiple myeloma is in progress. My non-Hodgkin lymphoma studies have also examined obesity-related anthropometric measures, dietary factors and serologic markers of immune activation and inflammation, as well as of dietary fatty acids. I have enjoyed local collaborations on studies of multiple myeloma with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute SPORE in multiple myeloma (Kenneth C. Anderson, PI) and on studies of Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia (Irene M. Ghobrial, PI). I currently co-lead a large pooled study of time-varying non-genetic risk factors for multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and common histologic and tissue molecular subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in our local cohorts and three external cohorts. I have also led or collaborated on numerous studies in large international consortia, where I have also held leadership roles: the International Lymphoma Epidemiology (InterLymph) Consortium, the International Multiple Myeloma Consortium (IMMC, now the Myeloma Working Group of InterLymph) and the National Cancer Institute Lymphoid Malignancies Working Group. I also represent the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study in a large multi-site genome-wide association study of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
