Collapse overview
Farrah J. Mateen, MD, PhD is originally from Saskatchewan, Canada where she received her medical degree (2005). She pursued adult neurology training at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, 2009) and a Fellowship in Medical Ethics at Harvard University (2008). Dr. Mateen's clinical and research fellowship training was at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (2012), supported by the American Brain Foundation. Dr. Mateen completed her doctoral studies in International Health at the Johns Hopkins University (2014) as a Sommer Scholar.

Dr. Mateen's clinical practice is dedicated to multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica where she enjoys seeing patients with diagnostically and therapeutically complex conditions. She leads a clinical trial funded by the National MS Society on light therapy for MS-related fatigue. She also performs research on other aspects of MS, ADEM (acute disseminated encephalomyelitis), and related disorders.

Dr. Mateen is principal investigator of the Bhutan Epilepsy Project, a multi-country study of a smartphone-based electroencephalogram (EEG), through the support of the Charles Hood Foundation. Her work includes collaborations throughout Africa and Asia on vulnerable populations such as refugees.

Dr. Mateen is the past chair of the American Neurological Association International
Outreach Committee and of the American Academy of Neurology's Global Health Section (2014-2016) and Ethics Section (2011-2013). She has worked with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, World Health Organization, Polio Eradication Initiative in Switzerland and India, and several NGOs.

Dr. Mateen has traveled to >35 countries and published >120 academic manuscripts to advance neurological disease research and clinical care.
