This project will review all DSM diagnoses to determine how many and to what extent they have scientific evidence of validity. The student role would be to review the scientific literature for those diagnoses and to compile a list of studies that assess diagnostic validity based on four standard validators (symptoms, genetics, course, treatment response). Further the extent to which major diagnoses have been altered since the 3rd edition will be documented and analyzed.
Available: 11/15/19, Expires: 12/31/20
The medical student can pick a topic of interest in psychiatry (diagnosis, treatment, conceptual aspects), and then design a research project to study that topic. Supervised readings and research will be assigned to deepen the students knowledge of the topic. An optional potential paper for publication could be prepared. Duration is flexible; meetings will be intermittent (every few weeks), so students should be motivated and self-directed.
