Lyme disease incidence is on the rise with more than 300,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. with more than half of cases each year occurring in children. Currently available Lyme disease diagnostics have well-recognized limitations that include false-positive as well as false-negative results, contributing to diagnostic uncertainty for patients and providers. Dr. Nigrovic is the founding chair of Pedi Lyme Net, a six-center emergency department research network, founded to evaluate new approaches to Lyme disease diagnosis in children. We approach eligible children who come to one of the participating emergency departments (EDs) for evaluation of potential Lyme disease.
The exact opportunity/student role would depend on the student’s availability and their time availability.
