Stephanie Brickner Jones, M.D.

I am interested in bariatric anesthesiology and I am a frequently invited lecturer on the anesthetic implications of obesity, bariatric surgery, and sleep apnea, locally, nationally and internationally. I have published review articles on those topics; serve on the Editorial Board of Obesity Surgery; act as content expert for the creation of a web-based course on the care of the bariatric surgery patient; and edited a book on patient safety in obesity surgery. I am a member of the Anesthetic Perioperative Care and Pain Management Task Force, Weight Loss Surgery Expert Panel, of the Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety. As a group, we are responsible for periodically reviewing the literature and advising on “best practices” in the care of weight loss surgery patients in Massachusetts.

In the operating room, I collaborate with Dr. Steven H. Loring on a study investigating the pulmonary impact of severe obesity. Esophageal pressure and respiratory airflow are measured to find the threshold airway pressure required to initiate lung inflation. Our initial findings indicate that BMI per se is not directly correlated with higher threshold pressures. Future studies will investigate the relationship between body weight distribution, as estimated by abdominal girth, and the threshold airway pressure.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
