Overview
My laboratory is in the Center for Excellence in Vascular Biology of the Department of Pathology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. My lab studies the cell biology of leukocytes and vascular endothelial cells and their adhesive interactions in the context of the pathophysiology of the inflammatory response. We are interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved leukocyte recruitment and in regulating vascular permeability, focusing on the role of vascular endothelial expressed adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and CD47 and the adherens junction protein, Vascular Endothelial-cadherin (VE-cadherin, cadherin-5). My lab seeks to understand the molecular mechanism of how both ICAM-1 and CD47 and VE-cadherin contribute to and regulate leukocyte recruitment and permeability. My laboratory research team combines expertise in endothelial cell biochemistry, immunology and live cell fluorescence microscopy techniques with my collaborators, Drs. Kevin Croce, Ingrid Sarelius, Andrew Liichtman, and Tanya Mayadas, who have significant expertise in intravital microscopy of the microcirculation and have established several experimental models of inflammation and vascular permeability.
