Overview
I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. My academic and clinical background includes training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which has shaped my strong interest in evidence-based medicine and the development of minimally invasive treatments for a wide spectrum of craniomaxillofacial conditions.

Under the mentorship of my supervisors, my current research focuses on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), particularly in understanding the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the disorder, such as different endotypes, and evaluating the outcomes of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.

Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a career as a surgeon-scientist. I am especially interested in exploring how minimally invasive surgical therapies can be effectively combined with non-surgical approaches to optimize treatment outcomes.

Investigating Upper Airway Collapse Patterns and Pharyngeal Muscle Function in Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Role Description: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disorder characterized by repeated upper airway collapse during sleep, leading to recurrent hypoxia, and ultimately increased cardiovascular disease risk. A key factor in OSA pathophysiology is ineffective dilator muscle function: Indeed, one of the most perplexing observations is that many patients have OSA despite potent activation of the largest dilator muscle (“genioglossus”. GG), for reasons that are unclear. We hypothesize that “low muscle effectiveness” is the consequence of different airway structures causing collapse in different patients: Specifically, with “lateral wall collapse”, forward movement of GG will have minimal functional impact. Low muscle effectiveness also has major implications for reduced efficacy of a recent surgical therapy called hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS), which relies on genioglossus effectiveness for its therapeutic effect, but only resolves OSA in about two-thirds of patients. We hypothesize that low muscle effectiveness is an important but unrecognized contributor to HGNS failure.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
