Broadly, the goals of our research group are to exploit novel MR imaging methods (sequences, processing methods, and contrast agents such as nanoparticles) to spatially and dosimetrically enhance radiation therapy treatments. These types of enhancements are divided into two general areas: 1) spatially focusing dose to tumor cells and 2) enhancing the radiochemical and radiobiological effect of radiation therapy in tumor cells. Most recently we are analyzing the MR images and outcomes of patients entered into a first in human clinical trial using nanoparticles to enhance the therapeutic ratio of radiation therapy treatments. In this clinical trial, patients have been given a dose of nanoparticles that preferentially uptake in tumors. The more uptake these nanoparticles have in the tumor, the greater effect that radiation will have. We are trying to determine the quantity and distribution of nanoparticles in tumors and use these data to learn more about the biology and physiology of tumors. A potential role for students would be to help analyze these imaging data by contouring areas of the body and tumors. Depending on interest and prior skills, there's also the opportunity to use machine learning and radiomics approaches to analyze the data.
