Recent advances in clinical genetics and genomic medicine lead to significant improvements in patient care, especially in the areas of preventive medicine. Novel next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies enabled interrogation of multiple genes in a single multi-panel test and lead to improved genetic diagnosis in a number of patients with an increased predisposition to cancer or other conditions. However, while a number of patients tested prior to the implementation of NGS multi-panel genetic testing received a negative result, some still might harbor an undiscovered pathogenic mutation in a cancer susceptibility gene. The project based at the VA Boston Medical Center Genetic clinic will involve the creation of the patient database with the goal of identification of such patients among individuals previously negative for pathogenic mutations who may benefit from multi-gene panel testing. We anticipate publishing the results of the project in a peer-reviewed journal. The student will review the patient medical records, create a patient database and write up a study. Interested students will have an opportunity to observe at the VA Genetic clinic.
