  1. (A McInerney-Leo) Jan 1, 2019 - Dec 31, 2022
National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC)
Identifying causal genetic variants in multiple primary melanoma and modifier variants in families with inherited melanoma, and exploring whether psychological constructs such as genetic fatalism are associated with sun protective and screening behaviors in high-risk individuals.
Role Description: Exome data analysis will be carried out using multiple methodologies to identify new genes, better understand the role of existing genes, and elucidate the role of modifier variants in melanoma susceptibility and prognosis. Psychological, behavioral and social factors will also be examined in family members undertaking CDKN2A testing to assess whether genetic fatalism is associated with sun protective and screening behavior prior to, and following, genetic testing.
Role: Co-Investigator and Supervisor to Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Dr Aideen McInerney-Leo
  2. Jan 1, 2019 - Dec 31, 2022
    UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship
Transforming mental health care for children with heart disease.
Role Description: Despite the documented high prevalence of psychological morbidity amongst children with heart disease and repeated recommendations for routine mental health assessment and an integrated approach to mental health care in medical settings, there are currently no studies assessing the impact, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of this model of care in Australia or overseas. The current state of evidence indicates there is an urgent need for a rigorously-designed trial of integrated routine mental health assessment and stepped care for the 65,000 Australians living with childhood-onset heart disease. This project will rigorously evaluate this model.
Role: Primary supervisor to PhD scholar, Katelyn Phillips
  3. Jan 1, 2019 - Dec 31, 2022

  4. (M Morris) Jan 1, 2019 - Dec 31, 2020
UNSW Brain Sciences and Translational Neuroscience Seed Grant
Evaluating the Gut-Brain Axis in Autism.
Role Description: In this study we will investigate the role of the diet and associated changes in the gut microbiota with the behavioural changes seen in ASD, and compare these to healthy control subjects. As the gut microbiome, and ASD symptoms, change over time, we will assess children across 2-18 years. Improved understanding of the nature of these diet-gut-brain interactions in ASD as proposed in this study can assist in developing targeted microbiome-mediated therapies for ASD.
    Role: Chief Investigator
  5. (M Farrar) Jan 1, 2019 - Dec 31, 2020
Motor Neuron Disease Research Institute of Australia Innovator Grant
Preference heterogeneity with respect to MND treatment.
Role Description: This project will bring together leading researchers in neurology, medical psychology, health economics and health services, combined with consumer and community participation, to address critical gaps in research and clinical practice translation by determining the value of MND treatments in terms of their clinical usefulness, costs and desirability. The project will provide much-needed data to improve patient- and family-centered healthcare and inform treatment-related decision-making for children and adults with MND.
Role: Chief Investigator and Mental Health Research Lead

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
