Health disparities have been demonstrated across many surgical specialties. Among these disparities, those experienced by patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) may lead to a particularly higher risk of developing worse health outcomes, as poor communication leads to a decrease in the quality and satisfaction of care, increased lengths of stay at the hospital, medical errors, and misdiagnoses. This poses a significant challenge to providing equitable and patient centered care. Understanding the scope of access provides an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of patient and provider facing barriers to providing optimal surgical care to patients with LEP. Identifying best practices based on 1) risk factors for patients with LEP, 2) barriers to access, 3) barriers to provision of optimal care; and 4) providers and institutions with better outcomes for patients with LEP to inform a solution and an intervention for providing optimal care to patients with LEP.

Medical student would assist with reviewing the literature, assessing the data, and preparing manuscripts. Depending on the student’s capacity with statistical software and familiarity with large clinical and administrative datasets, the student can become more involved in the analysis aspects of the project. I encourage students to submit abstracts to local and national meetings for presentation and contribute to manuscripts for publication as authors.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
