Globally there are more than one billion people with near vision impairment who can restore clear vision simply by wearing glasses. The purpose of this initiative is to address this global issue by providing a sustainable method of nearsightedness diagnosis and treatment to the patients, especially those with no or limited access to professional vision care in rural areas. Scientists at Mass Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School launched a nonprofit initiative, Nearsighted Globe, to address the costly global health issue of myopia in developing countries. Due to a lack of eye care services and the increased cost and time associated with eye care professionals traveling to remote communities, innovative strategies need to be employed to help these communities to receive timely and affordable eye care. The project draws together local and international stakeholders to mass produce and distribute, (1) an innovative and easy to use diagnostic instrument (refraction kit) for measuring appropriate eyeglass prescription for nearsighted patients, and (2) cost-effective glasses. Currently in the pilot phase, we have identified sites in China, Ghana and India and will continue to identify potential communities. Currently, the team includes Optometrists, and Vision and Human Factors scientists, and Global Health specialist. We are looking for students interested in any aspects of the project including, public and global health, cultural, marketing and promotion, fundraising, quality assurance, business, finance, and law.
