This project explores whether women use deferential language more frequently than men in the academic classroom setting. This is based on a pilot project we did while taking the Program in Clinical Effectiveness at the School of Public Health last summer, which is a unique environment given that >95% of the participants are physicians, mostly fellows and junior faculty within the Harvard system. We found that women ask and answer fewer questions and also use more deferential language compared to men (such as "This may be a silly question, but..."). This gender gap was attenuated in a smaller seminar-style class. We are planning to formalize this study in summer 2020.

We are interested in recruiting a student to observe classes in epidemiology and biostatistics and record question-asking behavior. In addition to getting to audit these popular graduate-level classes that may be helpful in future research endeavors. The courses in question take place from July 6 to Aug 14, 2020, and the commitment would be 8-5 most days during that period. The student would receive $2250 as a stipend and also have the potential to be a co-author on the final manuscript, depending on their interest. PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
