Since 2017, the Perinatal-Neonatal Quality Improvement Network of Massachusetts (PNQIN) has led a statewide quality improvement collaborative seeking to improve the care of women with opioid use disorder and newborns at risk for neonatal abstinence syndrome. Over 25 hospitals and multiple state and community organizations have come together in this effort. The initiative has numerous components, including a shared database of key outcome and process measures, twice yearly statewide summits, periodic webinars and workshops, and more.
Numerous scholarly projects appropriate for a medical student are possible within the scope of this initiative. These projects can range from epidemiologic research to qualitiative research to data analysis and display. They would be most appropriate for students interested in public health, maternal-child health, quality improvement, and clinical research.
