Of note, this project corresponds to a funded grant, which was the 2019 Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation-Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (APSF-FAER) Grant Award Winner.

Critical event debriefing is valuable in mitigating the negative impact of crisis events. It also offers opportunities for education, learning, wellness, and quality assurance. Yet, only a fraction of real crisis events are followed by any form of debriefing session. This is a mixed-methods study to increase the frequency of debriefing after perioperative crisis events. It also seeks to understand what providers learn and change, at the point of care, from proximal debriefing. This project represents patient safety translational research bridging lessons from decades of simulation-based training towards point-of-care, within-team, debriefing between anesthesia providers and ultimately full operating room teams. Preliminary research on this topic has been published in the June 2019 issue of Anesthesiology (Arriaga AF, Sweeney RE, Clapp JT, Muralidharan M, Burson RC, Gordon EKB, Falk SA, Baranov DY, Fleisher LA. Failure to debrief after critical events in anesthesia is associated with failures in communication during the event. Anesthesiology 2019; 130(6): 1039-48. PMID: 30829661). The HMS student would work directly with Dr. Arriaga (Assistant Program Director for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Anesthesiology Residency Program) on the grant goals and objectives. As Dr. Arriaga is the Assistant Program Director for Curriculum Development and Education Research, there will also be opportunities for those interested in medical education.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
