Many anatomical features of human joints and bones have shown to be associated with acute musculoskeletal injuries as well as degenerative joint diseases (e.g. OA). Several intrinsic (e.g. genetic factors) and extrinsic (i.e. sports participation) have shown to influence bone and soft tissue development. However, little is know on how these factors influence the detailed morphological features of human joints. The purpose of this project is to study the effect of early sports participation and obesity (as two main contributors to joint biomechanics) on development of the knee and hip joints.

The student scholar will be trained on quantitative techniques to measure key morphological features of the human knee and hip from MRI and CT images in 2D and 3D. Following training, student will take the lead on anatomy measurements and work with our research team to analyze the data to isolate the effect of sports participation and/or obesity on joint morphology.

Selected candidate is expected to present their findings in 1 peer-reviewed manuscript as well as a conference abstract. The project is designed in a way to assure the completion of all these milestones within 1 year.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
